This is Annamaria Zamboni, daughter of a rich Italian industrialist, Enrique Zamboni. She is accused of talking on her cellular phone while driving in the streets of Rome. As she enters the courtroom, she is confident that she'll receive a fine of a few hundred Lire, which her Daddy will gladly pay- no problemo, right?
The trial was conducted before Judge Antonio Milano. Unbeknownst to Annamaria, Judge Milano is very strict, and his "pet peeve" is women who talk on their cell phones while driving.
The first witness is Officer Carmine, who testifies that Ms. Zamboni was driving down the Via De Lorossa in her Ferrari at a high rate of speed. He followed her for a few minutes, and noticed she was gesturing with her hands and talking on her cell phone. She made several lane changes without signalling, and was generally driving in an erratic and unsafe manner. Finally, the officer put on his flashing lights and pulled the defendant over. Officer Carmine testified that he was going to give Ms. Zamboni a warning and ask her to drive more carefully, but when he approached the defendant, she rolled down the window and said "Can you wait a minute? I'm on the phone."
"Si signora," said Officer Carmine, and pulled out his ticket book and began writing a citation. When Ms. Zamboni finished her call, the ticket was complete, and the officer handed her the ticket and said "See you in court, Signora."
The only other witness was Ms. Zamboni, who denied driving eratically, but admitted to talking on her cell phone while driving.
Judge Milano found Annamaria guilty of driving while talking on her cell phone, fined her 50,000 lire (about $100 dollars) and ordered her to have her hair cut short immediately so that "each time you look in the rear-view mirror, you'll be reminded of what you did wrong."
Annamaria was shocked at the sentence, and defiantly said to the judge, "You can't do that to me. Do you know who I am?"
The judge calmly replied, "Yes, you're a woman who's about to get her hair cut."
The bailiff, Tony Spumoni, had studied for three months to be a hairdresser, and was chosen by Judge Milano to assist with his new "swift justice" program of quickly dispensing punishment to the defendants in his court.
Tony led Ms. Zamboni to the room behind the courtroom to administer the haircut. Tony normally gave defendants nice short haircuts, but Ms. Zamboni was very uncooperative. She kept trying to get out of the chair, and kept moving her head around so Tony couldn't cut her hair. Tony grabbed Ms. Zamboni firmly by the head and began lopping off her hair quickly.
"You are a pig," Ms. Zamboni said to Tony, but he remained calm and continued his work.
"And the Judge is a pig," said Ms. Zamboni.
Tony, who admired the judge very much, couldn't take it any more. He grabbed a pair of clippers and started clipping off all of Ms. Zamboni's hair.
Again she tried to escape from the chair, but it was no use. Tony had a firm grip on her head, and wasn't about to let go. As her hair was being buzzed, Ms. Zamboni defiantly spat on the floor and even spat on Tony. After most of her hair was buzzed, she stopped being defiant and began to cry. "I'm sorry," she said, "I'm sorry I spat on you and I'm sorry I called you a pig," she said, but it was too late. All her hair was lying on the floor.
"Apology accepted," said Tony, "Now let's go back in the courtroom, where you can pay your fine and go home."
The defendant, Giordana Bocaccio, is accused of speeding in a school zone. Officer Gnocci testifies that he observed the defendant driving through a school zone at a high rate of speed, brushing her hair and looking at herself in the rear view mirror. In her testimony, Ms. Bocaccio admitted she was brushing her hair, but denies driving at a high rate of speed.
Judge Milano finds the defendant guilty of speeding and sentences her to pay a fine of 10,000 lire and to have her hair cut short. She is immediately led out of the courtroom by Bailiff Tony Spumoni.
Ms Bocaccio seems a bit dazed at the suddenness of her punishment. In minutes, it's all over.
