MARY THE MECHANIC

This is Mary, our latest model. She's a 23 year old reserve soldier
in the U.S. Army, and as far as I'm concerned, she can take me prisoner anytime!!
She's an expert with an M-16 rifle, but her real specialty is turning
wrenches- SHE'S A HUMVEE MECHANIC!! |

Her unit expects to be shipping out soon to "parts unknown," and
she has decided that she's not going to take along her long blonde hair. |
 |
When she joined the Army, she didn't cut her hair.
"Most of the girls cut their hair short, but I kept mine in French braids,
and it stayed out of the way."
In fact, Mary has never had short hair- until now.
She's decided to get a super short "pixie" haircut to just over an inch
on top and just under an inch on the sides and back. |

She calmly sits in the barber chair, admits that she's nervous,
but says to go ahead and cut her hair.
After the first snip, she turns to the mirror and exclaims, "I have
short hair!!"
Over the next 30 minutes, her long blonde hair piled up in her lap.

When the clippers were turned on, she got goosebumps.
"I've never had my hair cut with clippers," she says.
We cut the hair in back and the sides super short using the clipper
over comb technique. When we finished the haircut, Mary spent a lot of time
playing with her new short hair in the mirror.
"It's like a new toy," she says. |

"Are you glad you did it?" we ask.
"Yes. It's going to take some getting used to, but I think I'm going
to keep it short for a long time."
"Are you afraid of going to war?" we ask.
"Not as afraid as I was of that first snip," she said.
