She climbed up into the top bunk and weeped quietly.
(Left- Nicole feels her long hair for the last time)

After another 20 minutes, a female guard walked by, escorting another
woman who was clipped to the scalp. "That's Lola," said Gina. "She's been
here before too." |
 |
For the rest of the morning, every few minutes, another prisoner would
be escorted past our cell, many still weeping from having their long hair
cut. |
 |
Only Lola and Gina were shorn bald. The others, like myself were
left with "some" hair.
(Left- Elana listens to the warden's warnings about breaking the rules
before he cuts her hair) |

In the afternoon, after all the new prisoners had been "indoctrinated,"
we were led to a large room in the basement for lunch. |
 |
I hardly recognized them as the group of women on the bus this morning.
They all had "bad haircuts," and many were still weeping as they ate their
lunch.
(Left- Elana is forced to cut Gabrielle's hair. They were both convicted
of conspiracy to defraud an elderly man of his life savings) |

The meal consisted of spaghetti with a tablespoon of tomato sauce
served on a tin plate. I asked if the warden had asked any of them for sex
in exchange for not getting their hair cut. |
 |
They all shook their heads. "No." I finished eating in silence,
and the guards led us back to our cell. |
 |
Once back in the cell, I asked Gina what the warden said to her in the
morning. "Nothing I didn't already know," she said, "Things get pretty rough
when you come back here."

"What will happen?" I asked.
(Left- Michelle runs her hands through her long hair for the last
time.) |
 |
"Special treatment from the guards," she said,
"They give you twice as much work, little time to yourself, and make
your life a living hell. That's the price you pay for coming back here,"
she said matter of factly. |
 |
Just then, a guard opened the cell door and said, "Gina, we need
someone to clean the toilets in the work area. Bring your toothbrush." Gina
sighed and said, "See what I mean?" She took her toothbrush and left with
the guard. |
