Like a good bottle of Scotch, some things take years to get ready.
The first time I talked to Tanya about shaving her head was 4 years ago.
She wanted to shave her head immediately, but couldn't because her sister
was getting married in a few weeks. We exchanged emails, and Tanya sent me
her picture, which made me all the more eager to get Tanya in the chair.

"I'll call you after the wedding," she said. Months went by and
no phone call from Tanya. I assumed she had changed her mind.The following
summer, Tanya called and said she was ready to shave. She made an appointment,
and then chickened out on the morning of the haircut. When she called to
chicken out, she was very apologetic. I told her I appreciated the call because
many of our models chicken out and never call to cancel, leaving us waiting
(like caged tigers) for models that never arrive. I told her when she was
ready to shave her head to call me. |

Recently, Tanya called and said she was "FINALLY" ready to shave
her head.
"Sure you are," I said with just a hint of sarcasm. She made an appointment
for the following evening. All the next day I expected to hear from Tanya
to chicken out again, but the phone was strangely silent. Could it be that
Tanya is really ready this time? |

That evening, Tanya arrived, and was more than a little nervous-
terrified might be the appropriate term- about shaving her head.
"I want to do it," she said, "But I'm also afraid to do it."
I told her we could go ahead and shoot the "before" footage, and she
could always chicken out, but once the haircut started, there was no turning
back. |

People often ask me who decides how we cut the models' hair. I can
tell you that in Tanya's case, it was ME who decided that if she got in the
chair, and she didn't stop me, I would run the clippers right down the middle
and FINALLY shave her head. |
 |
We shot the before footage with several outfits, and then I invited
her to "have a seat..."
Tanya was wearing a strapless dress. She sat in the chair and I wrapped
the cape around her chest, leaving her shoulders bare. |
 |
I adjusted all the cameras, and then without preamble, plugged in
the clippers, turned them on and asked "are you ready?"
Tanya said "yes" quietly, and one second later the clippers were driving
right down the middle of her scalp.
"Oh my God!" she exclaimed, seeing the stripe of naked scalp, knowing
there would be no chickening out this time. |

When the headshave was done, Tanya smiled a lot. She has a great
head- nicely shaped and LOOKS GREAT shaved smooth. The whole time we shot
the after footage, she smiled a lot, glad that she had overcome her fears
and shaved her head. |
 |
Headshaving for a woman is as terrifying and scary as it is for
a man, except multiplied by 10 because women are "not supposed to shave their
heads." Our hats are off in admiration to Tanya for having the bravery to
shave her head- FINALLY!!
